State Beach Supervision

Today I met with Gary Best,  Assistant Regional Manager for The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, Division of Public Parks and Public Lands.

We discussed the issues regarding beach use on state land off Shore Rd : toilet facilities, trash, fires, overnight camping, fireworks and runoff from the road into the lake.

Gary agreed that the area needs supervision and will provide a periodic clean up from state park personnel in Naples. The toilet facilities are not a simple issue........too good and will attract more visitors, not good enough and it could be worse than it is now. This issue will be monitored for further consideration. 

Fires, overnight camping, alcohol, fireworks are not permitted. He will recommend a diversion ditch in the road to redirect the runoff and a bulletin board for posting notices. I requested that he leave copies of notices with us so they could be replaced quickly.

Problem situations:

Contact Gary any time, and if or when the situation warrants he will send either the Sheriff or someone from the State Park in Naples or both.

Volunteer program:

The state has a volunteer program to assist with monitoring with public lands. More on this later.

The thrust of our discussion was for the state to maintain a visible and continuous presence so that visitors know the "someone cares and is watching" and that it be maintained for the enjoyment of all.

Who Owns "State Beach"

What is often reffered to as The State Beach is indeed owned by the state according to state conserved lands maps and Denmark tax records. We are pursuing contacts and will update you as needed.

We currently have two individuals performing CBI duties at the Hancock pond boat ramp:

 

      Charlie Record – On Saturday 6-10AM and Sunday 7-11 AM

      Shelby Leblond – Fridays 6-10 AM, Saturdays 3-5 PM, Mondays 6-10 AM

 

Peter has sent me their email addresses.  So I will be in touch with them to ensure we have an open line of communication,

specifically for the  interim and final reports.

LEA Test Site Buoys

Subject: New buoy in Hancock and Sand Pond

No, Mother Nature did not drop new rocks in the middle of the ponds!  LEA has placed one buoy in each pond that is clearly labeled 'Test Site' and clearly displays the LEA logo.  Each buoy marks the location of water temperature testing that is now being done on the ponds.  The testing utilizes a series of temperature sensors each placed at different depths. 

Like any buoy, please do not touch, tie up to or move the buoy.  In addition, please do not pull up the sensors to have a look! 

On Sand Pond the buoy should be very obvious as no other formal marker is placed on the pond.

On Hancock Pond the buoy is located in the narrow part of the lake between Harrington Point and Wrigths Point.  For those that have one of the Hancock Pond maps (which have been and continue to be for sale at a very reasonable price) make a triangle by drawing a line from marker 4 to 20, from 20 to 21, from 21 back to 4.  The new marker is about in the middle of the triangle.  

Since this is a tight area please be extra cautious.  Expect 'rubber necking' and confusion as boaters adjust to the new buoy.   

Please, tell your neighbors, tell your friends!  This email is being sent to a very small group of owners, please spread the word.  The more people that know that these new markers are out there and are NOT marking a hazard the safer everyone will be on the water.  Thanks.
